Three

NOLAN

I woke up feeling like hell, my whole body hurt, and I felt so empty. The emptiness combined with the pain was making me grumpy.

“There’s my boy.” Mom smiles as she walks in with a tray. “I made you some soup and toast.”

“I feel like a truck hit me.”

“I can imagine, the first one is always the worst because you never know when it will hit. And they say it’s worse for omegas.”

“First what?”

“Heat.”

Sitting up, I glare at her. “I’m not in heat.”

“Did the pills I gave you help?”

“Yes.”

“You’re in heat.”

“Why now?”

“I have no idea, unless that young wolf you were frolicking with is your mate.”

“How would I know that?”

“Well, you have the mark, so it would react to your mate.”

“React how?”

“I don’t know, Nolan.” She finally sets the tray down. “Baby, I’m not an omega. We’d have to consult with someone who is to know.”

Nodding, I spoon up some soup and nibble my toast. Mom nods and leaves the room. Heaving a sigh, I take my time eating and then set the tray on the floor and curl back up for a nap.

When I wake up again, I feel marginally better. I take my next dose of the heat suppressors, shower, and head to the library to do more work on my paper. Securing my backpack, I hop on my bike and ride down to the Academy.

The library is blissfully empty, and I set up at a table in the back corner. My pencil is flying over the paper and I am filling up note card after note card. I’m up after different books when I feel eyes on my back.

Glancing over my shoulder, I see the beefy guy I ran into yesterday.

Great. Just want I need.

Ignoring him, I go back to my table and flip through the first book while he comes over and takes a seat.

Without even looking up, I speak first. “Can I help you?”

“Maybe.”

His voice is soft, and I can feel my heart race. “I have a paper to write, so what do you possibly need?”

He says nothing, just sits there watching me. My wrist throbs and I feel sick to my stomach. Picking up my notebook and cards, I load up my backpack and go out to my bike. I’m securing my bag and thankful he hasn’t followed me.

Throwing my leg over my seat, I roll away and then pedal hard to put plenty of distance between me, the library, and the star quarterback of Shadowhelm University.
